Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. -Romans 12:2 NIV 2011
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. -Eph. 6:12 NIV 2011

The Woman's Role, According to the Holy Scriptures

What is the role of the woman, according to the Scriptures? Let's not view this according to any "patriarchal movement," or according to "baptist churches" etc, but let us discover the role of the woman according to none other than the Holy Word of God...

The Creation of Woman, and Why She was Created

"And God saith, `Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, and let them rule over fish of the sea, and over fowl of the heavens, and over cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that is creeping on the earth.' And God prepareth the man in His image; in the image of God He prepared him, a male and a female He prepared them. And God blesseth them, and God saith to them, `Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over fish of the sea, and over fowl of the heavens, and over every living thing that is creeping upon the earth.'" -Genesis 1:26-28

1) Both man and woman were created in the image of God. If we study 1 Corinthians 11, we see that the woman is the glory of the man, yet still also the image of God. See my Headcovering Study for beautiful detail about this. See also my Study on Women Bible Teachers, which goes with both the headcovering study I just linked, and also with this article you are reading.

2) Both man and woman are to rule over the fish, fowl, cattle, creeping thing, and over all the earth. The above does not say this is just for the man. It says this rulership is to both of them - "and let them rule."

3) These commands were given to both the man and the woman - "and God saith to them" - Have kids and fill the earth, subdue the earth, and rule over the fish, fowl, and every living thing that is creeping upon the earth.

Why was woman created?

"And Jehovah God saith, `Not good for the man to be alone, I do make to him an helper -- as his counterpart.' And Jehovah God formeth from the ground every beast of the field, and every fowl of the heavens, and bringeth in unto the man, to see what he doth call it; and whatever the man calleth a living creature, that [is] its name. And the man calleth names to all the cattle, and to fowl of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; and to man hath not been found an helper -- as his counterpart. And Jehovah God causeth a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he sleepeth, and He taketh one of his ribs, and closeth up flesh in its stead. And Jehovah God buildeth up the rib which He hath taken out of the man into a woman, and bringeth her in unto the man; and the man saith, `This [is] the [proper] step! bone of my bone, and flesh of my flesh!' for this it is called Woman, for from a man hath this been taken; therefore doth a man leave his father and his mother, and hath cleaved unto his wife, and they have become one flesh." -Genesis 2:18-24

1) God declared that it was not good for the man to be alone, so He declared that He would make a helper for him, as his counterpart. This means the woman was created to:

  • Help man
  • and
  • Be his counerpart

This means the man needed help, so now woman comes along to his side to help him. This also means that the woman was created as the man's counterpart, not servant, and not lower than he. Counterpart means "The correspondent part; the part that answers to another," as per the 1828 Webster's Dictionary.

2) Before God created Woman, he brought all the animals to Adam for him to name them. In doing so, Adam could then notice how all the animals had counterparts, but he did not.

"to man hath not been found an helper -- as his counterpart."

3) It was then that God put Adam into a deep sleep, and created his counterpart and helper out of his rib. Eve was built up from the rib of Adam. She was created from his side, as she is to be at his side, not below him or above him, but at his side, as his counterpart and helper. Woman is literally God's gift to man.

4) The above passage ends with:

"therefore doth a man leave his father and his mother, and hath cleaved unto his wife, and they have become one flesh."

Why? Because woman was taken out of man, and upon marriage, man and woman symbolically become one again. Just as the church and Christ are symbolically one, with Christ being the Head, and the church being the body. It is these verses that 1 Corinthians 11 directs us to read and understand when commanding the woman's headcovering. This is because as per Ephesians chapter 5, the man represents Christ, and the woman represents the church. Christ is the Head, and the church is the body. Therefore the husband, representing Christ, is the head. The wife covers her head to show her representation of the church, which is the Body.

The Fall of Man (and Woman)

"Unto the woman He said, `Multiplying I multiply thy sorrow and thy conception, in sorrow dost thou bear children, and toward thy husband [is] thy desire, and he doth rule over thee.'" -Genesis 3:15

1) After Adam and Eve broke God's one rule, and ate of the forbidden tree, each were given a judgement. The man, the serpent, the devil, and the woman were all given judgements as repercussions of having disobeyed God. This disobedience rippled through all dimensions, and through the whole universe. Watch my video study series on the book of Revelation to see what I'm referring to.

2) The above Genesis 3:15 is the judgement towards woman. Now she's to have uncomfortable menstruation and childbearing. She would also desire a strong husband who would lead, and she was to be ruled over by him. Under the New Covenant, the woman can be saved in childbearing, if she and her husband continue strong in the faith, etc. See 1 Timothy 2:15 below:

"and she shall be saved through the child-bearing, if they remain in faith, and love, and sanctification, with sobriety."

3) Why does the wife desire a leading husband, and why is the husband to rule over the wife? Likely because Adam was right there with Eve, when she partook of the forbidden fruit, and the Scriptures do not record him at all attempting to stop her, and the commandment was directly given to Adam of not partaking of the fruit, so he knew better:

"And Jehovah God layeth a charge on the man, saying, `Of every tree of the garden eating thou dost eat; and of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou dost not eat of it, for in the day of thine eating of it -- dying thou dost die.'" -Genesis 2:16-17

The verses directly following that are where Eve was made from the rib of Adam. Eve knew the rule, as we see in her dialogue with the serpent, however she did change it around a bit, and was inaccurate. I think God and Adam made sure she knew the actual rule. Notice that the actual rule is that they are not to eat of the forbidden tree. Yet, what did Eve tell the serpent?

"And the woman saith unto the serpent, `Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we do eat, and of the fruit of the tree which [is] in the midst of the garden God hath said, Ye do not eat of it, nor touch it, lest ye die.'" -Genesis 3:2-3

It is not recorded that God said they weren't to touch the tree, they just weren't to eat of it. The no touching rule appears to be something that Eve added, but attributed to God, but it doesn't appear to be actually said by God. Then, we see the serpent talking Eve into trying the fruit, meaning she broke her added rule of not touching it, and she partook and ate, which broke God's actual rule. Adam was with her, and he did not stop her, even though he had the rule directly from God, and knew also that it was wrong:

"And the serpent saith unto the woman, `Dying, ye do not die, for God doth know that in the day of your eating of it -- your eyes have been opened, and ye have been as God, knowing good and evil.' And the woman seeth that the tree [is] good for food, and that it [is] pleasant to the eyes, and the tree is desirable to make [one] wise, and she taketh of its fruit and eateth, and giveth also to her husband with her, and he doth eat;" -Genesis 3:4-6

Next, we get the blame game. Adam blames Eve, and Eve claims the serpent made her forget the rule:

"and the man saith, `The woman whom Thou didst place with me -- she hath given to me of the tree -- and I do eat.' And Jehovah God saith to the woman, `What [is] this thou hast done?' and the woman saith, `The serpent hath caused me to forget -- and I do eat.'" -Genesis 3:12-13

So now it becomes more clear as to the second portion of the judgement on women - it can also be considered partially on man, as well, for the woman is to desire her husband to lead, and the husband is to rule over his wife. Under the New Covenant, this turns into a blessing, in which we see the husband being the head of the wife, symbolizing Christ being the Head of the church, and the wife covering her head, showing she is the body, symbolizing the body of Christ on this earth - the Church. You can learn more about this in this study.

Portions of the curse given in the garden are lifted when we turn to Christ as our sole Lord and Saviour:

CURSE: "And to the man He said, `Because thou hast hearkened to the voice of thy wife, and dost eat of the tree concerning which I have charged thee, saying, Thou dost not eat of it, cursed [is] the ground on thine account; in sorrow thou dost eat of it all days of thy life, and thorn and bramble it doth bring forth to thee, and thou hast eaten the herb of the field; by the sweat of thy face thou dost eat bread till thy return unto the ground, for out of it hast thou been taken, for dust thou [art], and unto dust thou turnest back.'" -Genesis 3:17-19

NEW COVENANT BLESSING: "`All things were delivered to me by my Father, and none doth know the Son, except the Father, nor doth any know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son may wish to reveal [Him]. `Come unto me, all ye labouring and burdened ones, and I will give you rest, take up my yoke upon you, and learn from me, because I am meek and humble in heart, and ye shall find rest to your souls, for my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light.'" -Matthew 11:27-30

CURSE: "Unto the woman He said, `Multiplying I multiply thy sorrow and thy conception, in sorrow dost thou bear children, and toward thy husband [is] thy desire, and he doth rule over thee.'" -Genesis 3:16

NEW COVENANT BLESSING: "for Adam was first formed, then Eve, and Adam was not deceived, but the woman, having been deceived, into transgression came, and she shall be saved through the child-bearing, if they remain in faith, and love, and sanctification, with sobriety." -1 Timothy 2:13-15

"because members we are of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones; `for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and they shall be -- the two -- for one flesh;' this secret is great, and I speak in regard to Christ and to the assembly; but ye also, every one in particular -- let each his own wife so love as himself, and the wife -- that she may reverence the husband." -Ephesians 5:30-33

Before moving on, it's important to point out that Genesis 3:16 says the woman's husband rules over her, not all men. There is not one place in the Bible that says that men are higher than women, or that women must obey men. This is a familial authoritative order, and we will get more into that as we continue on in this study.

A Token of Authority on a Woman's Head Gives her a Measure of Protection

"And it cometh to pass that mankind have begun to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters have been born to them, and sons of God see the daughters of men that they [are] fair, and they take to themselves women of all whom they have chosen. And Jehovah saith, `My Spirit doth not strive in man -- to the age; in their erring they [are] flesh:' and his days have been an hundred and twenty years. The fallen ones were in the earth in those days, and even afterwards when sons of God come in unto daughters of men, and they have borne to them -- they [are] the heroes, who, from of old, [are] the men of name." -Genesis 6:1-4

1) The Sons of God refer to the angels in the Old Testament. In this case, these are fallen angels. These fallen angels took women that they chose, and created demonic half breeds with them, such as the fallen ones. "Fallen ones" is from the Hebrew word Nephilim, which is left untranslated in the YLT Numbers 13:

"And the men who have gone up with him said, `We are not able to go up against the people, for it [is] stronger than we;' and they bring out an evil account of the land which they have spied unto the sons of Israel, saying, `The land into which we passed over to spy it, is a land eating up its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in its midst [are] men of stature; and there we saw the Nephilim, sons of Anak, of the Nephilim; and we are in our own eyes as grasshoppers; and so we were in their eyes.'" -Numbers 13:31-33

Women who appear "fair" to demonic fallen angels are those who don't have the proper token of authority upon their heads:

"because of this the woman ought to have [a token of] authority upon the head, because of the messengers" -1 Corinthians 11:10

Messengers is the literal translation from the Greek word "aggelos," which is where we derive our English word of 'angel.' Aggelos literally means 'a messenger sent from God.' For a woman to appear fair to the fallen angels, she must not be walking in God's ways. A woman of God is not physically enticing to fallen angels. I have a lot more info on this in this article.

A Fair Woman of Stubborn Behavior

"A ring of gold in the nose of a sow -- A fair woman and stubborn of behaviour" -Proverbs 11:22

In other words, a beautiful woman who does not behave godly - or is stubborn of behavior, is likened to a gold ring in the nose of a pig. These are the types of fair women that the fallen angels/demons were attracted to in Genesis 6:1-4

Clearly, there is nothing wrong with a woman being beautiful. What's important is not how fair looking the woman is, it's her behavior. Is she a godly woman?

A Woman of Worth

"A woman of worth who doth find? Yea, far above rubies [is] her price. The heart of her husband hath trusted in her, And spoil he lacketh not. She hath done him good, and not evil, All days of her life. She hath sought wool and flax, And with delight she worketh [with] her hands. She hath been as ships of the merchant, From afar she bringeth in her bread. Yea, she riseth while yet night, And giveth food to her household, And a portion to her damsels. She hath considered a field, and taketh it, From the fruit of her hands she hath planted a vineyard. She hath girded with might her loins, And doth strengthen her arms. She hath perceived when her merchandise [is] good, Her lamp is not extinguished in the night. Her hands she hath sent forth on a spindle, And her hands have held a distaff. Her hand she hath spread forth to the poor, Yea, her hands she sent forth to the needy. She is not afraid of her household from snow, For all her household are clothed [with] scarlet. Ornamental coverings she hath made for herself, Silk and purple [are] her clothing. Known in the gates is her husband, In his sitting with elders of the land. Linen garments she hath made, and selleth, And a girdle she hath given to the merchant. Strength and honour [are] her clothing, And she rejoiceth at a latter day. Her mouth she hath opened in wisdom, And the law of kindness [is] on her tongue. She [is] watching the ways of her household, And bread of sloth she eateth not. Her sons have risen up, and pronounce her happy, Her husband, and he praiseth her, `Many [are] the daughters who have done worthily, Thou hast gone up above them all.' The grace [is] false, and the beauty [is] vain, A woman fearing Jehovah, she may boast herself. Give ye to her of the fruit of her hands, And her works do praise her in the gates!" -Proverbs 31:10-31

The above described an example of a woman of worth. Just as Jesus gave us an example of how to pray in Matthew 6:9-15 - "After this manner therefore pray ye..." For godly women striving to be women of worth, the above is an example, therefore 'after this manner therefore behave...'

The Woman of Worth:

1) Treats her husband well, such that she does not waste his hard-earned money, and because of her good treatment of him and her hard work, he trusts in her.

2) She learns skills and works with her hands. She is not afraid of work and learning, in order to better serve her family.

3) She is strong, and will rise early to take care of her family when needed, and will travel far to get good, needful things for her family. She finds good deals.

4) She helps the poor; Gives to proper charities, etc.

5) She is a prepper. She sees to it that her family has what is needed in case tough times arise.

6) She may help bring in money, for example, selling things she makes.

7) While she dresses in beautiful clothing, her character shows her truly clothed in strength and honor.

8) She speaks with wisdom and kindness.

9) She is not lazy or slothful.

10) Her children and husband are happy with her.

11) Those who know her see her godly character and recognize her as a woman of worth.

The Familial Authoritative Order, and The Wife's Role

In general Christian society, both Christian men and women are to submit to each other, regardless of gender:

"subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of God." -Ephesians 5:21

The Body of Christ is the universal Church of all believers world-wide, and in the Body of Christ, gender is not an issue, and doesn't matter:

"for as many as to Christ were baptized did put on Christ; there is not here Jew or Greek, there is not here servant nor freeman, there is not here male and female, for all ye are one in Christ Jesus;" -Galatians 3:27-28

However, there is an order and role for women in the Familial Authoritative Order, and it's because of the relationship between Christ and the Church:

"The wives! to your own husbands subject yourselves, as to the Lord, because the husband is head of the wife, as also the Christ [is] head of the assembly, and he is saviour of the body, but even as the assembly is subject to Christ, so also [are] the wives to their own husbands in everything. The husbands! love your own wives, as also the Christ did love the assembly, and did give himself for it, that he might sanctify it, having cleansed [it] with the bathing of the water in the saying, that he might present it to himself the assembly in glory, not having spot or wrinkle, or any of such things, but that it may be holy and unblemished; so ought the husbands to love their own wives as their own bodies: he who is loving his own wife -- himself he doth love; for no one ever his own flesh did hate, but doth nourish and cherish it, as also the Lord -- the assembly, because members we are of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones; `for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and they shall be -- the two -- for one flesh;' this secret is great, and I speak in regard to Christ and to the assembly; but ye also, every one in particular -- let each his own wife so love as himself, and the wife -- that she may reverence the husband." -Ephesians 5:22-33

1) The wife is to submit to her own husband. Not one Scripture in either Old or New Testaments say that women have to submit to men. The wife is to subject herself to her own husband. That is the only man that is her head/authority, other than her father when she's a child, and those she may willingly choose to put herself under, such as a male boss at a job, etc.

2) The wife is to subject herself to her own husband, because her husband symbolizes Christ. As Christ is the head of the church, and the church is the body, so is the husband the head of the wife, and the wife symbolizes the body - the church.

3) Husbands are to love their own wives, as Christ loves the assembly/church. They are to love their wives and be willing to give themselves for their wives, as Christ gave Himself for the church. Husbands are also here commanded to love their wives as they love themselves.

4) Women generally desire to be loved by their husbands, while husbands generally desire respect and acceptance from their wives. The husband is commanded to love the wife, and the wife is commanded to be subject to her husband and to reverence him.

5) As Christians are referred to as the Body of Christ on this earth, with Christ as the head, so for this reason, the man is to leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

6) The Familial Authoritative Order of the wife being subject to her husband, and the husband loving his wife so much that he'd be willing to give himself for her, is established as a picture-lesson to the world of the relationship between Christ - the Head, and the church - the body.

When the Husband Asks the Wife to do Something Ungodly

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them." -Colossians 3:18-19

1) Wives are to submit themselves - meaning willingly - to their own husbands, but only "as it is fit in the Lord." If a husband wants his wife to do something that is not fit in the Lord, the wife is under no obligation to submit to that. Notice also that no Scriptures say that the husband is to demand that the wife be subject to him. This is the wife's job to choose to follow the command of being subject to her husband.

2) Meanwhile, the husband is commanded to not only love their wife, but is also commanded to not be bitter against her. Men and women are significantly different. We are two halves that are supposed to compliment and complete each other. Sometimes the differences can be interpreted as an annoyance. Husbands are not to be bitter against their wives. I think another reason for this, is because as we read earlier, the desire of the wife is towards her husband. She wants desperately to be loved by him, and if he becomes bitter against her, it can shatter her.

When the Husband is Not Following the Word of God

"In like manner, the wives, be ye subject to your own husbands, that even if certain are disobedient to the word, through the conversation of the wives, without the word, they may be won, having beheld your pure behaviour in fear" - 1 Peter 3:1-2

1) Wives are to be subject to their own husband, and only as fit in the Lord, as we saw earlier.

2) If the husband is disobedient to the word (AKA the Scriptures), then the wife may, without the word, win the husband back to the word via pure behavior, such as being a godly woman of worth, as described earlier.

3) There is nothing wrong with a wife teaching her husband something. However, the Scriptures are clear that she is not to teach him with having authority over him.

The Sexual Relationship of the Husband and Wife

"And concerning the things of which ye wrote to me: good [it is] for a man not to touch a woman, and because of the whoredom let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her proper husband; to the wife let the husband the due benevolence render, and in like manner also the wife to the husband; the wife over her own body hath not authority, but the husband; and, in like manner also, the husband over his own body hath not authority, but the wife. Defraud not one another, except by consent for a time, that ye may be free for fasting and prayer, and again may come together, that the Adversary may not tempt you because of your incontinence" -1 Corinthians 7:1-5

1) "Whoredom" here, is under the older meaning, not the modern meaning of today. Whoredom in the Young's Literal Translation of the Bible means "Lewdness; fornication; practice of unlawful commerce with the other sex. It is applied to either sex, and to any kind of illicit commerce." This is from the definition in the 1828 Webster's Dictionary.

2) To avoid this whoredom/fornication/sex outside of marriage, man and woman are to marry.

3) There is to be only one husband in the marriage - "let each man have his own wife." And there is to be only one wife in the marriage - "let each woman have her proper husband." Or as the King James Version puts it - "let every woman have her own husband." Polygamy is not permissible for the Christian marriage.

4) The husband and wife are responsible for rendering due benevolence to one another in the marriage bed, meaning neither party is to withhold sexual union from the other. The only times sexual union is allowed to be withheld from a spouse, is "by consent for a time, that ye may be free for fasting and prayer." I would also think that if one of them is sick would be another reason, as well as when the wife is menstruating:

"`And a man who lieth with a sick woman, and hath uncovered her nakedness, her fountain he hath made bare, and she hath uncovered the fountain of her blood, -- even both of them have been cut off from the midst of their people." -Leviticus 20:18

5) With (I believe) the exception of illness or menstruation, both parties must be in full consent to forgo the marriage bed, and only for a short time, for prayer and fasting, and then they are to physically reunite again. Sex within the marriage is one of the ways the married couple bond, and remain endeared to one another. It's not just for procreation. We see sex in the marriage being used for comfort, for example:

"and Isaac bringeth her in unto the tent of Sarah his mother, and he taketh Rebekah, and she becometh his wife, and he loveth her, and Isaac is comforted after [the death of] his mother." -Genesis 24:67

"And David comforteth Bath-Sheba his wife, and goeth in unto her, and lieth with her, and she beareth a son, and he calleth his name Solomon; and Jehovah hath loved him" -2 Samuel 12:24

5) Some wives withhold sex from their husbands in order to try to manipulate their husbands to get what they want, or to punish them. This is against the Scriptures. The husband is not to withhold from the wife, and the wife is not to withhold from the husband.

How Women are to Dress, and Do their Hair, Makeup, Jewelry, etc.

As we read in Proverbs 31, there is nothing wrong with a woman dressing in beautiful, nice clothing. In fact the Proverbs 31 example of a type of woman of worth shows her wearing silk and purple. Those were expensive materials to make clothing out of, and also beautiful. While she may wear very nice clothing, Proverbs 31 makes it very clear that the important thing for the woman of worth to be clothed in is strength and honor.

"I wish, therefore, that men pray in every place, lifting up kind hands, apart from anger and reasoning; in like manner also the women, in becoming apparel, with modesty and sobriety to adorn themselves, not in braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or garments of great price, but -- which becometh women professing godly piety -- through good works." -1 Timothy 2:8-10

1) Like Paul's wish for (Christian) men everywhere to lift kind hands apart from anger and arguing, he also desires this for women - "in like manner also."

2) Women are to dress in becoming apparel - therefore their clothes should be appropriate. We know from Proverbs 31 that it can be nice clothing.

3) She should dress modestly and soberly.

4) While a woman's wearing a long, modest dress is a great way to demonstrate this, it isn't commanded so. The Greek word for "apparel" above, is "katastolḗ," which is only used once in the Bible, but we see its usage in non-canonical sources being used under the context of how one is to dress, or referring to clothing. Therefore, the translation of "katastolḗ" to the English word "apparel" seems to be a good and accurate translation.

PERSONAL NOTE: While I am "dresses only," the Bible does not specifically command so for women. The main point is to dress modestly, and to dress in such a way that you are clearly seen as dressing as a woman, and not as a man:

"`The habiliments of a man are not on a woman, nor doth a man put on the garment of a woman, for the abomination of Jehovah thy God [is] any one doing these." -Deuteronomy 22:5

In other words, the above is telling us that women are not to dress like men, and men are not to dress like women.

While I personally choose to be "dresses only," - which is more accurately "dresses mostly," that is my choice, as that's how I best see the way to dress both feminine and modest. If I do an activity that I feel would be better in pants, then I will wear the pants, but still dress in accordance with femininity and modesty.

The Bible does not tell us specifically how to dress modestly, but we can all agree that it involves the covering of one's primary and secondary external reproductive parts. While I am a bit abundant in the breast area, I do keep them covered, but sometimes cleavage just shows. I don't willingly show my cleavage, but I'm not a cleavage Nazi, either.

The Scriptures don't specifically tell women that we should dress in such a way that doesn't tempt men. Why don't we have that command? I think it's because it doesn't matter what we wear, some guy somewhere will think it's the hottest thing going. Therefore, the above 1 Timothy 2:8-10 goes on to say the important clothing of Christian women. It is that:

"which becometh women professing godly piety -- through good works."

Ding! Just like the Proverbs 31 woman!

5) The above passage in question also mentions the wearing of jewelry, and the braiding of hair. What is that about? I personally rarely wear any jewelry whatsoever, other than my watch and wedding ring, but for me, that is not a religious preference, it's a comfort one. I'm autistic, and have sensory issues. Wearing jewelry itself is not a sin. We see God symbolically clothing Jerusalem, who was symbolized as a woman, in nice clothing and jewelry:

"And I do wash thee with water, And I wash away thy blood from off thee, And I anoint thee with perfume. And I clothe thee with embroidery, And I shoe thee with badger's skin, And I gird thee with fine linen, And I cover thee with figured silk. And I adorn thee with adornments, And I give bracelets for thy hands, And a chain for thy neck. And I give a ring for thy nose, And rings for thine ears, And a crown of beauty on thy head. And thou dost put on gold and silver, And thy clothing [is] fine linen, And figured silk and embroidery, Fine flour, and honey, and oil thou hast eaten, And thou art very very beautiful, And dost go prosperously to the kingdom." -Ezekiel 16:9-13

Here we see expensive apparel, a myriad of jewelry, beauty, and prosperity. Therefore, the wearing of jewelry itself is not the sin. As for braiding the hair, this isn't referring to today's standard, modest side or back braid. It's referring to how women used to braid very expensive gems and jewels through their hair, and the more jewels and gems were braided in the woman's hair, the more she was considered rich and higher esteemed in society.

1 Timothy 2:8-10 isn't saying that women aren't allowed to wear expensive clothing and jewels, or braid their hair. It's saying that rather than how you look on the outside - rather than trying to gain accolades of man by the vain display of wealth, how about you adorn yourself in what's important, in that which glorifies God, and godliness. The Christian woman should therefore adorn herself in that "which becometh women professing godly piety -- through good works."

Our 1 Timothy 2:8-9 passage is sister to a related passage in 1 Peter 3:

"whose adorning -- let it not be that which is outward, of plaiting of hair, and of putting around of things of gold, or of putting on of garments, but -- the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible thing of the meek and quiet spirit, which is, before God, of great price" -1 Peter 3:3-4

1) The outward adorning of the Christian woman is not what's important. She does her hair fancy, or she doesn't. She wears jewelry, or she doesn't. She wears expensive clothing, or frugal thrift store finds. Whatever. The godly woman doesn't dress to impress others around her. The woman of God is supposed to adorn "the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible thing of the meek and quiet spirit, which is, before God, of great price."

This again calls us back to our Proverbs 31 example. The woman of worth in the example put forth in Proverbs 31 does happen to wear expensive, nice clothing, but that's not the important part. The important part was that she was clothed with 'strength and honor.' We know that Scripture does not contradict Scripture, and as per Isaiah 28:10-13, and 2 Timothy 2:15 we are to let Scripture interpret Scripture. We see clearly from the Proverbs 31 woman the important thing to don ourselves in, and we see that confirmed in 1 Timothy 2:8-10. We now see this mentioned again here in 1 Peter 3:3-4. If we were to take this out of context, then we'd be saying that not only are women not allowed to wear jewelry or braid their hair, but they are also not allowed to wear clothing at all - "whose adorning -- let it not be ... {the} putting on of garments."

Let's see the adorning that the Bible does suggest to women of God, from all three passages in question:

Proverbs 31: ..."Strength and honour [are] her clothing"

1 Timothy 2: ..."which becometh women professing godly piety -- through good works."

1 Peter 3: ..."the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible thing of the meek and quiet spirit, which is, before God, of great price"

Head Covering

"and every woman praying or prophesying with the head uncovered, doth dishonour her own head, for it is one and the same thing with her being shaven, for if a woman is not covered -- then let her be shorn, and if [it is] a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven -- let her be covered" -1 Corinthians 11:5-6

1) Every (Christian) woman who prays (I believe this refers to praying out loud) or prophesies (which can also include sharing the Word of God via the Bible) with her head not covered, dishonors her own head.

2) The woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, and it is the same dishonor as her head being shaved.

3) If a woman does not have her head covered, then let her have short hair, or a shaved head, yet if it is a shame for a woman to have short hair or a shaved head, then she should have a head covering on. And we know it is a dishonor for her hair to be shaved, because it says "the head uncovered, doth dishonour her own head, for it is one and the same thing with her being shaven."

4) The woman is to have long hair, and to wear a head covering. It is a dishonor for her not to be covered, and it is a shame for her to not have long hair. Her long hair is a glory to her, as per 1 Corinthias 11:15. Nature gives women a natural covering, via long hair, and then we Christian women are to put a physical covering on top of our heads to show that our husbands are the head (symbolizing Christ being the head) and the wife is the body (symbolizing the church body). For an extensive study on 1 Corinthians 11:1-16, click here.

While the Scriptures don't specifically say what type of clothing a Christian woman is to wear, they do specifically command that a Christian woman should don a head covering. This is because of the Familial Authoritative Order as we went through earlier, in Ephesians 5. Notice, however, it doesn't say the woman has to cover all of her hair or not, nor does it say what type of style of headcovering she must wear. Some women wear hats, some wear bandannas, scarves, or wide headbands, etc. This is left up to us.

How Christian Women are to Behave in Church Assembly Gatherings

"Let a woman in quietness learn in all subjection, and a woman I do not suffer to teach, nor to rule a husband, but to be in quietness" -1 Timothy 2:11-12

1) Many people try to use the above passage to proclaim that women have to submit to men, and that women are not allowed to teach the Bible. However, take an honest look at the above passage. It doesn't say that.

2) "A woman" above, is referring to a wife, as can be clearly seen from the reference to the husband in the above passage, and as is abundantly clear in the verses surrounding the above passage in the Scriptures.

3) In the assembly, the wife is to "in quietness learn in all subjection." When is the learning time at the church gathering? It's during what most churches commonly call the "sermon." While the preacher is up there preaching, the wife is to learn quietly, while remaining in subjection to her husband. Why is this even mentioned? This is because it used to be assumed that women were not intelligent enough to learn deep things, and some may have thought that it wasn't appropriate for a woman to be sitting in the same learning as the men. In the Jewish temple, the men and women were separated. In the Christian church gatherings, the families were all together. The women were allowed to learn from the sermon, sitting right next to their men.

In the first Christian churches (and some still do this) people were free to ask questions, make comments, and add to the sermon while it was being preached by the pastor. To keep order in the church, the wives were to remain silent, and instead only the husband stood up to speak, as he is considered the spokesperson for the whole family. Since men are generally less verbal than women, this also helps make sure the sermon wasn't going to go on endlessly.

4) The above passage also tells us that the wife is not to teach, nor rule her husband. We see from such passages as 1 Peter 3:1-2 that the wife can teach her husband, but she is not to do so with holding authority over him. He represents the head (Christ), and she, with her head covered, represents the body (church).

5) The above passage is merely reminding wives to remain in subjection to their own husbands, and to be silent during the learning time/sermon at the church assembly gathering.

Here's another passage that brings up the same thing:

"for God is not [a God] of tumult, but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints. Your women in the assemblies let them be silent, for it hath not been permitted to them to speak, but to be subject, as also the law saith; and if they wish to learn anything, at home their own husbands let them question, for it is a shame to women to speak in an assembly." -1 Corinthians 14:33-35

1) God is a God of order and peace, not of disorder and tumult. To keep the peace in the church assembly gathering, the wife is to be silent during the learning time. If her husband does not ask her question in the assembly, then she can ask her husband the question later, at home. Then, the husband may already know the answer, thus why he didn't inquire, or he may decide to later ask that question at a future assembly gathering.

2) The wife is to "be subject, as also the law saith." This is from:

"Unto the woman He said, `Multiplying I multiply thy sorrow and thy conception, in sorrow dost thou bear children, and toward thy husband [is] thy desire, and he doth rule over thee.'" -Genesis 3:16

Remember, we saw earlier that the wife is to subject herself to her husband and her husband is to love her, as Christ loves the church.

As you hopefully clearly see, the above passage is also just merely stating that women are to be silent during the learning time at church, and to remain subject to their own husbands. That's all the two "silence" scriptures are saying. Neither say that women are subject to all men, nor do they say that women are not allowed to teach the Bible.

Christian Women and the Home

"The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed." -Titus 2:3-5

1) The aged women are to behave in a way that is becoming of holiness, they are not to falsely accuse others, they are not to drink too much wine (notice it doesn't say they can't have any wine. That's a false Baptist teaching. Alcohol consumption is fine in the Bible. It's drunkenness that's the sin.) They are to teach good things, and also to teach younger women to...

2) Be sober, love their husbands and children, be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, and obedient to their own husbands.

3) Notice the above Titus 2 passage does not at all say women can only teach other women, or women can only teach women and children. I can't tell you how many times people have tried to tell me it says that, but it doesn't. This same chapter tells the aged men and younger men how they are to behave, too. Older women are to help guide and teach the younger women, but it doesn't say that that's the only group they can teach. Remember, the only teaching stipulation the Scriptures lay on Christian women, is that they are not to teach their own husbands as with having authority over them. That's it. There is no other stipulations in the Bible about who women can or can't teach - including teaching and preaching the scriptures.

4) The younger women are to be keepers at home. Women were created as men's counterparts to help them, remember? The man's curse is to work by the sweat of his brow. This is not the woman's curse:

"And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return." -Genesis 3:17-19

The husband is to be the provider for his family:

"and if any one for his own -- and especially for those of the household -- doth not provide, the faith he hath denied, and than an unbeliever he is worse." -1 Timothy 5:8

The wife is to be her husband's counterpart and helper. While he is earning the money to provide for the household, we see from Proverbs 31 that she is frugal with his money, and is taking care of the household. This does not mean that the wife is forbidden to earn money. We see the Proverbs 31 woman making and selling things for profit. However, the wife, as the husband's helper, is to be a keeper of the home, while he is out earning the money. The wife is to guide the house:

"I wish, therefore, younger ones to marry, to bear children, to be mistress of the house, to give no occasion to the opposer to reviling;" -1 Timothy 5:14

A mistress of the house was defined as "The female head of a family," or "a woman who governs," as per the 1828 Webster's Dictionary. The wife therefore guides, or rules the household, while the husband is out working 'by the sweat of his brow.'

The Christian Woman's Role as Part of the Body of Christ

1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4, and other places in the Scriptures tell us about how the church, which is the body of Christ on this earth, works together as one body, built up of different body parts, and that each Christian is a part of the body - a body part. My husband often refers to me as an "elbow" in the body, because I tend to get straight to the point, and will right out say the truth, which can sometimes seemingly knock the wind out of others. 1 Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4 both list gifts of the Holy Spirit that Christians have, to use in the body of Christ, and also to spread the Gospel and to work for the Kingdom/Reign of God. Here is a list, compiled from 1 Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4:

- A word of wisdom

- A word of knowledge

- Faith

- Gifts of healings

- In-workings of mighty deeds

- Prophecy

- Discernings of spirits

- Divers kinds of tongues

- Interpretation of tongues

- Apostles

- Teachers

- Powers

- Helpings

- Governings

- Proclaimers of good news (the gospel)

- Shepherds

The Scriptures nowhere say that only certain classes of people, people of certain education, or only certain genders can have and practice certain gifts of the Spirit within the body of Christ.

"and ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And some, indeed, did God set in the assembly, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, afterwards powers, afterwards gifts of healings, helpings, governings, divers kinds of tongues;" -1 Corinthians 12:27-28

All Christians are mentioned as making up the body of Christ on earth.

"for also in one Spirit we all to one body were baptized, whether Jews or Greeks, whether servants or freemen, and all into one Spirit were made to drink, for also the body is not one member, but many;" -1 Corinthians 12:13-14

All Christians are baptized into the body of Christ via the Holy Spirit. It doesn't matter if they are Jews or Greeks, servants or freemen, etc. They are all members of the body.

"for as many as to Christ were baptized did put on Christ; there is not here Jew or Greek, there is not here servant nor freeman, there is not here male and female, for all ye are one in Christ Jesus;" -Galatians 3:27-28

In the body of Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, servant nor freeman, male nor female. All Christians, regardless of race, status, education, and gender, etc, are all ONE in Christ. Therefore, the gifts of the Spirit that are given to Christians that make up the body of Christ are for all Christians. This means women can have the gifts of teaching, prophecy, apostleship, etc, as well as men.

Examples of Women Utilizing their Calling From God in the Bible

- In Exodus 15:20, we read that Miriam was an inspired one (YLT) or prophetess (KJV)

- In Numbers 6:2, we see that women could be Nazarites right along with men.

- In Judges 4:1-9, we learn about Deborah, the wife of Lapidoth. She was the judge of Israel at that time, and a prophetess.

- In Judges 4:15-22, we read of Jael, the wife of Heber. She helped save Israel by killing Sisera, the enemy who put Israel under oppression. This was in answer to Israel's cries to the Lord to set them free.

- In 2 Kings 22:14, we see five men inquiring of Huldah the prophetess, wife of Shallum.

- In Isaiah 8:3, we see that Isaiah's wife was a prophetess.

- In Mark 15:40-41, we see some of the women that followed Jesus.

- In Luke 2:36-38, we read of Anna the prophetess, who served in the temple night and day.

- In Acts 21:9, we read of the four daughters of Philip, in that they were prophetesses.

- In Romans 16:1-2, we read of Phebe, and of how she was a minister of the church in Cenchrea, and a leader of many, including of Paul the Apostle:

"And I commend you to Phebe our sister -- being a ministrant of the assembly that [is] in Cenchrea -- that ye may receive her in the Lord, as doth become saints, and may assist her in whatever matter she may have need of you -- for she also became a leader of many, and of myself." -Romans 16:1-2

- In Romans 16:3, we read of Priscilla, who was mentioned along with her husband Aquilas, as a fellow worker in Christ Jesus with Paul the Apostle.

- In Romans 16:7, we read of Junias, who was a female apostle.

- In Philippians 4:2-3, we read of two women - Euodias and Syntyche, who labored with Paul the apostle in the Gospel.

There are many more examples in the Bible, such as Sarah, Esther, Ruth, etc, but I wanted to share some of the women that for some reason don't tend to get much mention in Churchianity.

Conclusion

Both the Feminist Movement, and then decades later, the Patriarchal Movement have hurt Christianity. Both of these movements and their spinoffs, were only able to hurt, because people became lazy in studying their Bibles, and listened to what Churchianity said, instead of digging in, and seeing for themselves. As has been clearly shown in this article, women are not doormats, nor are they lower than men. Women are just as allowed to teach the Bible as men are. We see such examples as Deborah, Priscilla, Phebe, and Junias in the Scriptures to help show this in action.

However, the woman's role is different from that of a man's. While the man is to rule the house, the woman is to guide the house. While the man is to provide for his family, the wife is to take care of the house and the children. She is to help her husband, as his counterpart.

While I am dresses only, that is not a biblical command. The Scriptures instead tell women to focus on dressing and acting in a way that professes godliness, and to be clothed with honor and strength. However, the Scriptures do teach that Christian women are supposed to cover their heads, and it's because of the marriage representing Christ and the church.

I hope this article blessed you, and helps to spur you on to do your own studies.

Have a blessed day.

Build Your Foundation on the Rock of Salvation

"It’s like a person building a house by digging deep and laying the foundation on bedrock. When the flood came, the rising water smashed against that house, but the water couldn’t shake the house because it was well built. 49 But those who don’t put into practice what they hear are like a person who built a house without a foundation. The floodwater smashed against it and it collapsed instantly. It was completely destroyed." -Luke 6:48-49 CEB

"The Lord lives! Bless God, my rock! Let my God, the rock of my salvation, be lifted high!" -2 Samuel 22:47 CEB

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." -John 8:32 CEB

"Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." -John 14:6 CEB

The terms "Christian" and "personal relationship with Jesus Christ" have been thrown around so much, that for many people, they have lost their original savor. What is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Is it going to church? Is it being a "good person?" Is it via doing certain rituals, or following certain traditions? No, it is so much simpler than that.

Jesus says:

"Look! I’m standing at the door and knocking. If any hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to be with them, and will have dinner with them, and they will have dinner with me." -Revelation 3:20 CEB

Let Jesus into your heart and life. Put your faith and trust in Him, and in Him alone.

Why did Jesus Christ come to this earth? He came to pay for our sins. Have you ever broken any of the Ten Commandments? Did you know that Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount that just looking at someone with lust in your heart is the same thing as committing adultery in your heart?

Many people will say I'm a good person. Sure, I've stolen a few paper clips in my time, and I've told some lies, but I've never killed anyone, so I'm good enough for heaven. Don't be so sure. Have you ever felt hatred toward someone? If so, then you are guilty of committing murder in your heart:

"Everyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that murderers don’t have eternal life residing in them." -1 John 3:15 CEB

If you have stolen, lied, lusted after someone, hated someone, loved someone or something more than God, etc., then you have broken at least 5 of the Ten Commandments. Do you really think you'd make it to heaven? Not according to God's Word:

"Don’t you know that people who are unjust won’t inherit God’s kingdom? Don’t be deceived. Those who are sexually immoral, those who worship false gods, adulterers, both participants in same-sex intercourse, thieves, the greedy, drunks, abusive people, and swindlers won’t inherit God’s kingdom." -1 Corinthians 6:9-10 CEB

But there is good news:

"That is what some of you used to be! But you were washed clean, you were made holy to God, and you were made right with God in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God." -1 Corinthians 6:11 CEB

We are all sinners:

"All have sinned and fall short of God’s glory" -Romans 3:23 CEB

Even Mary, the woman chosen by God to be a vessel that would carry Jesus in her womb, was a sinner, and in need of a Savior:

"In the depths of who I am I rejoice in God my savior." - Mary said this in Luke 1:47 (CEB). Only sinners need a Savior, and Mary also accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior.

We are all imperfect, fallible sinners:

"This is the message that we have heard from him and announce to you: “God is light and there is no darkness in him at all.” If we claim, “We have fellowship with him,” and live in the darkness, we are lying and do not act truthfully. But if we live in the light in the same way as he is in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from every sin. If we claim, “We don’t have any sin,” we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." -1 John 1:5-8 CEB

The blood of Jesus Christ is what cleanses us from all sins. Jesus came to this earth to die to pay for our sins. You see, Leviticus tells us that 'the life is in the blood,' and that it takes spilt blood to atone for sin.

When we choose to truly believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and to live our lives for Christ, then Christ's spilt blood cleanses us from our sins:

"Come now, and let’s settle this, says the Lord. Though your sins are like scarlet, they will be white as snow. If they are red as crimson, they will become like wool." -Isaiah 1:18 CEB

Jesus tells us this:

"God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him won’t perish but will have eternal life. God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him isn’t judged; whoever doesn’t believe in him is already judged, because they don’t believe in the name of God’s only Son." - Jesus said this, in John 3:16-18 (CEB)

Paul gives us a simple "step by step process" on how to be saved:

"Because if you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord” and in your heart you have faith that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Trusting with the heart leads to righteousness, and confessing with the mouth leads to salvation. The scripture says, All who have faith in him won’t be put to shame." -Romans 10:9-11 CEB

Jesus is our one and only mediator:

"There is one God and one mediator between God and humanity, the human Christ Jesus" -1 Timothy 2:5 CEB

Jesus is our High Priest:

"Also, let’s hold on to the confession since we have a great high priest who passed through the heavens, who is Jesus, God’s Son; because we don’t have a high priest who can’t sympathize with our weaknesses but instead one who was tempted in every way that we are, except without sin." -Hebrews 4:14-15 CEB

We are to follow the Lord and the Bible, not traditions of people:

"Jesus replied, “Why do you break the command of God by keeping the rules handed down to you?" -Matthew 15:3 CEB

Jesus is God:

"Without question, the mystery of godliness is great: he was revealed as a human, declared righteous by the Spirit, seen by angels, preached throughout the nations, believed in around the world, and taken up in glory." -1 Timothy 3:16 CEB

If Jesus isn't the Lord of your life, then I hope that you will let Him into your heart and life this very moment.

"But God shows his love for us, because while we were still sinners Christ died for us." -Romans 5:8 CEB

Have you built your foundation on the Rock of Salvation?

Jesus is the way. If you would like to receive Jesus into your heart and life, then let Him know. Pray to the Lord, telling Him that you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and that you believe that Jesus died on the cross to pay the death penalty for your sins. Tell this to God in your own words, from your heart.

"The wages that sin pays are death, but God’s gift is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." -Romans 6:23 CEB

Believe, and Receive:

"You too heard the word of truth in Christ, which is the good news of your salvation. You were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit because you believed in Christ." -Ephesians 1:13 CEB

When you believe on Jesus Christ, you receive the Holy Spirit. You are sealed as a child of God.

If you have accepted Jesus Christ into your heart and life as your Lord and Savior, and you believe that Jesus died on the cross in your place, to pay the death penalty for your sins, and that Christ rose from the dead three days later, and you are ready to let Him lead your life, and you will live for Him, then you are saved, and born again.

You are now a saved Child of God, with the Holy Spirit living within you. Dedicate your life to the Lord, and live for Him. Please get a Bible (I suggest the Common English Bible - CEB) and turn to the Gospel of John. That is the fourth book in the New Testament. If you don't have a Bible, then you can read it for free, online - here.

After you've read the Gospel of John, go on to read Acts, and then Romans. These three books will bring you through the Gospel, the early church, and basic Christian doctrine. After you've read these three, then turn to the beginning of the New Testament, and read it all the way through. After that, read both the Old and New Testaments.

You should also follow the Lord and get baptized in water. A Believer's Baptism doesn't save you. Only faith in Christ saves you. A Believer's Baptism is an outward showing of your salvation. It symbolizes you being born again. When you are lowered under the water, it shows you dying to your old self, and when you are raised up out of the water, it symbolizes you being born again, as a new creature in Christ. This is called a Believer's Baptism, because, according to the Bible, a person is supposed to get baptized after they have believed on Christ. Anyone who was "baptized" before having faith in Christ just got wet - nothing more. You don't need to find a church to get baptized in. Any born again Christian can baptize you in any acceptable body of water - even a public swimming pool.

Find a good, local church congregation to attend. Search in your area for a Nazarene church, Foursquare church, or non-denominational Full-Gospel church.

Immerse yourself in the Bible. The Bible is God's love letter to you. It is also your Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.
