Did you know that oil never represents the Holy Spirit in the Bible? What does represent the Holy Spirit in the Bible? Let's take a look:
"And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God." -Revelation 4:5
Just as the Trinity contains Father, Son, and Spirit, so we also see that the Spirit is divided severally:
"But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will." -1 Corinthians 12:11
"For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth." -Zechariah 4:10
"And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth." -Revelation 5:6
The Holy Spirit is the Seven Spirits of God. In the Bible, the LAMP represents the Holy Spirit, not the oil.
In the parable of the Ten Virgins, we see that five virgins had oil in their lamps, and five did not. The five that didn't couldn't light their lamps, as there was no oil to fuel them. They went off, to buy oil for their lamps, but it was too late. The marriage supper was about to begin, and the five foolish virgins missed out, as the door was closed. The lamps were the Holy Spirit. All ten virgins had the Holy Spirit, but only the five wise virgins provided oil for their lamps, so that their lights would shine. Christians are told to LET their light shine:
"Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." -Matthew 5:15-16
LET your light shine. How do you do that? First, make sure you have oil, and make sure that once you have oil in your lamp, you aren't hiding the light that shines forth from the lamp.
If the lamp is the Holy Spirit, and we are to make sure it has oil, then what is the oil? First of all, who provides the oil? Does the Holy Spirit provide the oil, or do we? Recall that the five foolish virgins when out to buy oil.
If we study the two witnesses in Revelation chapter 11, we see a reference to Zechariah 4 - where it also discusses these two witnesses. It calls them the two olive trees. Further, the chapter tells us that these two olive trees - the two witnesses of Revelation 11, empty the oil out of themselves, through pipes, into the seven lamps, which is the Holy Spirit of God:
"And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof" -Zechariah 4:2
"And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?" -Zechariah 4:12
"Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth." -Zechariah 4:14
"And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth." -Revelation 11:3-4
Anointed ones are those who produce oil, like the two witnesses being represented as olive trees. Like the two witnesses, it's our job to put oil into our lamps, else we'll be like the foolish virgins, with lamps that don't shine.
While true Christians have the Holy Spirit sealing them, and dwelling within them, it's still their job to provide the oil. The Holy Spirit (lamp) plus oil (Christian fruits) equals a lamp that shines bright. Don't hide the light.
"But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." -Galatians 5:18-25
Walking in the Spirit is a choice. Walking in the Spirit produces oil, which goes into your lamp.
